Headshot = Your Face. Branding = Your Story.
Headshots vs. Branding Images: Why the Distinction Matters
In an age where imagery is ubiquitous— distinctions between the types of photography that works are being muddled. So, for professionals, it’s worth knowing the difference between a headshot and a branding image, and when each are effective. Despite being used interchangeably in casual conversation (“I need a new headshot for my website."), these two photographic species serve very different evolutionary purposes.Headshots: You face on a very good day.
Essentially, a headshot exists to answer one question: What do you look like on a very good day. There is no elaborate narrative in a headshot about your entrepreneurial journey or professional story. And very little to no use of location and environment to enhance your story. A headshot is generally a tightly framed, face-first, light-balanced depiction of the human being people can expect to encounter in reality. Ideally, it should look like you—just a version of you who got enough sleep.Headshots are really effective for:Professional biosLinkedInCorporate directoriesTeam member images on company websitesConference speaker pages
A headshot’s job is modest but essential: present a trustworthy, competent face to the world, as opposed to presenting your entire professional story. The two images below are headshots.
Branding Image: It's your Personality… but Art Directed
A branding image (or lifestyle image) answers a much bigger series of questions: Who are you, what do you do, where do you do it, how do you do it differently, what stage are you in in your career, how should the viewer perceive you, and why should someone what to work with you? These images are conceptual. They’re contextual. They are story based. They show you in an environment that communicates your brand’s identity, whether that means a laptop in a minimalist coworking space or an artfully messy desk strewn with the tools of your trade, or a surgical center, or a law office, or a luxury estate. Branding images may demonstrate you doing something vaguely work-related: writing, strategizing, facilitating, designing, thinking deep thoughts while staring out a window. Unlike a headshot, they’re intended to tell a story. Actually, a series of stories. In short:Headshot = your face, professionally captured.Branding image = your brand, visually celebrated.
One is about identity. The other is about both identity and story. Both are important, but they are not interchangeable—and most high-level professionals benefit from branding and lifestyle imagery as an element of building brand.
